My Radio

As I have mentioned before, I wasn't the person who normally listened to radio. I always preffered playing CD's instead. Few months ago I decided to give it a try. I decided that the best place to start will be home. So the following morning I tuned to Ukhozi FM. DJ Sbu was still there. I got to admit I enjoyed the breakfast show. It was full of humor and craziness. It sort of defined me.

I then started listening to 702. In that station I had two favorite hosts, Redi Direko and Tom London. Tom has since left the station. He hosted 'Talk at 9 with Tom London'. Tom was the kind of host that you can describe as 'Free-Spirited'. I was impressed by his knowledge of black culture and his willingness to learn. I miss his 'Millie-Pap' song (all the fans of Tom will know what I am talkin about)...
And then there is Redi Direko. I like her but I don't (not sure if I am making sense). She knows her story however she tends to personalise every discusion. I don't understand why we have to hear about her family or the boyfriend. The show is not about her. I believe some of the stuff she shares on air is unneccessary. To me, that's just an invitation for stalkers and the next thing she'd be complaining.

My other favorite radio show is 'The Menage a Trois' hosted by Mpho Maboi on Yfm. I started listening to it about two weeks ago. The music is out of this world. Every playlist is carefully selected. Mpho's energy gives the show that killer-sting. The downside to it is that the show is only two hours. I wish that could make it three hours.

Now gimme those shows and my day is guaranteed to be a great one.

RGXhosa

Last week I watched the second episode of the second season of Real Goboza and my first thought was 'Where the heck is Noah and Dineo from the first season?' I have everything against Khuli Roberts. I think she is one unhappy-disoriented-emotionally unbalanced person. I read one her columns on Sunday World (It suprises me why they are allowing her to write for them) and it took me three lines to realise that she was full of crap. I haven't read her article ever since.

I fail to understand why she is on a show like RGB. 1) I think she is a bit old for the show. 2) She thinks the show is about her. 3) She is bloody irritating. 4) There is no chemistry between her and Siyabonga.

I like Siyabonga though. Maybe it's because he can ball. I think he is talented however I am not sure if he should be on RGB. Maybe he should stick to Street Journal.

As Xhosas say ' Andibeva ncam ncam'!

Fiasco At The Essential Rush with Chilli M

I am not the person who normally listens to radio, so last Monday I decided to listen to Y-fm. At that time Chilli M aka Vikani Masinga was presenting his show The Essential Rush. When I turned on the radio it seems that there was some sort of confrontation going on in the studio. This how, more or less, the dialogue went.

Chilli M: Dineo (Dineo is the producer of the show), you mentioned on the recent Y-magazine that I was impossible to work with. So I have decided that we cannot work together...It's either you leave or I leave...(no response from Dineo). Look at it this way, if I leave McG can take over the show. And if you leave I'd get to have more listeners, as it seems you are standing in way of the show's listenership growth.

Dineo: ...(finally says something) I have only been here for six months and the listenership is at 600 000. When I first came there was 400 000 listers...

So the dialogoue went on forever, with Chilli being the main talker. Eventually Chilli asked William Lehong, a newsreporter on the show, what he would do? William suggested that the last person that was hired should be the last person out. Funny enough, William was that person. So Chilli fired William.

Personally I thought that was a good act. None of it was real. No doubt the stunt that Chilli pulled will get him more listeners. To my suprise when I turned on DJ Sbu breakfast show the following day, people were talking about it - how Chilli M was out of line. It looks like people took it seriously. I maybe wrong but I bet my last R5 that whole thing was just an act. People might believe it to be true based on the fact that Chilli was not on his show the next day. Some might even suspect that he was suspended. I checked every newspaper to find out what might have happened but I could find nothing. It's either Chilli M show is not popular or the newspapers thought exactly like me - that there is nothing to it.

As it turns out that Chilli M is the master of controversies - The story about the Jack Daniels dude, the story about Casandra Gudluza and now this.

If the whole aim of that fiasco was to get more listeners, well they have succeded. I can't wait for Chilli to come back and explain himself.
